  • Allow for a grinder when comparing manual machines
  • Automatic milk and assisted tamping solve different problems
  • Measure room above the hopper and behind the water tank

A good espresso machine should suit the way you want to make coffee. Some people enjoy adjusting the grinder and steaming milk; others want help with the fiddly parts before the school run. Buying more automation only makes sense if it removes the steps you find frustrating.

The Ninja Luxe Café Premier is our Top Pick for its approachable combination of grinding, brewing and milk frothing. The compact De’Longhi Dedica Duo is our Budget Pick, while the Sage Oracle Jet is the premium choice for guided espresso with very little manual preparation. Our ten recommendations cover distinct routines, from manual espresso preparation to one-touch cappuccinos.

What matters when choosing

We focus on drink preparation, grinder requirements, milk handling, cleaning and how much control or guidance each machine provides. Each recommendation explains who the product suits, its practical strengths and the compromises to consider.

The best choice depends on your routine and available space. Compare the exact model and included accessories, then check the current Amazon offer before ordering.

The top 10: our recommendations

1. Ninja Luxe Café Premier ES601UK: An approachable all-in-one coffee setup

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Built-in grinder and weighing simplify dosing
  • Automatic milk frothing
  • Espresso, filter-style and cold coffee modes

Cons

  • Takes substantial worktop space
  • Filter coffee is less compelling than its espresso

The Premier is our most useful starting point for someone who wants fresh-bean coffee without buying a separate grinder. Built-in weighing and grind guidance reduce guesswork, while automatic frothing takes another unfamiliar job off your hands. Its approachable controls and useful guidance make it a sensible first machine.

Its range of drinks is a bonus, although filter coffee is a less convincing reason to choose it. We would buy it primarily for espresso and milk drinks. You still move the portafilter and empty the puck, so choose the Magnifica Evo if a complete one-touch drink is your priority.

2. De’Longhi Dedica Duo EC890.M: Learning espresso in a small kitchen

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Slim 15cm-wide body
  • Manual steam wand for practising milk texture
  • Hot espresso and cold-extraction settings

Cons

  • A grinder costs extra
  • Some dripping after a shot

The Dedica Duo keeps the entry cost and footprint manageable while leaving you in charge of the preparation. Consistent espresso and an improved steam wand make this a credible place to learn rather than simply a cheap stopgap. Its narrow body is particularly useful beside other kitchen appliances.

Budget for an espresso-capable grinder if you want to use fresh beans. Milk texturing is manual, and the lack of a three-way solenoid means some dripping after brewing. Buy it for a compact, manual routine; spend more on the Ninja if you want the machine to guide the process.

Key features
  • 15 BAR PRESSURE: Brewing system to achieve your desired espresso; high-capacity filter baskets for a richer, flavorful espresso
  • MY LATTE ART: This steam wand lets you texture milk microfoam for experimenting with latte art; create frothy cappuccinos, macchiatos, or flat whites

  • STYLE & CONVENIENCE: Iconic shape (only 15 cm wide) combined with style to add real charm to your kitchen; a metal barista tamper is also included

3. Sage Oracle Jet: Premium espresso with automated preparation

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Automatically grinds, doses and tamps
  • Guided touchscreen and automatic milk
  • Grind-adjustment feedback helps consistency

Cons

  • Large and expensive
  • Cannot brew and steam simultaneously

The Oracle Jet is for someone who values the portafilter ritual but wants help with almost everything around it. Automated grinding, dosing and tamping prepare the coffee, and the screen guides you through extraction and milk. Its combination of espresso quality and an accessible learning curve suits someone stepping up their daily coffee routine.

The practical catches matter at this price: it occupies a lot of counter space, stray grounds can need wiping up and brewing and steaming happen sequentially. It makes sense for frequent milk-coffee drinkers who will use the automation every day, rather than occasional espresso drinkers seeking a small upgrade.

Key features
  • Automated Precision: Integrates automatic grinding, dosing, tamping, and milk texturing, transforming beans to latte in under a minute, allowing you to enjoy...
  • Auto Queue & ThermoJet: Line up your next step, whether steaming milk or brewing espresso, so it happens automatically. Enjoy fast, energy-efficient heating and...

  • Intuitive Control: LCD screen interface offers volumetric or timed shot control, making it easy to customise your coffee experience

4. Sage Bambino Plus: Compact espresso with automatic milk

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Automatic milk temperature and texture settings
  • Quick-heating ThermoJet system

Cons

  • No built-in grinder
  • You still dose and tamp by hand

The Bambino Plus separates two decisions that are often bundled together: you can prepare your espresso manually but let the wand handle the milk. Its compact body suits kitchens where an integrated grinder would be too bulky.

We would pair it with a capable separate grinder rather than spend the whole budget on the machine. You must still weigh, distribute and tamp the grounds yourself. For a coffee enthusiast building a small setup in stages, that flexibility is a strength; for a beginner wanting on-screen guidance, the Ninja is easier.

5. Sage Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction: Guided espresso with hot and cold options

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Step-by-step grind and dose guidance
  • Lever-assisted tamping keeps preparation tidy
  • Cold extraction alongside familiar hot drinks

Cons

  • Rear water tank needs clearance
  • Automatic dairy-milk texture may need adjustment

The Touch Impress is a strong fit when you want to learn without starting from a blank slate. It recommends adjustments, guides the dose and uses a lever to tamp the coffee in place. This listing is the Cold Extraction version, which adds chilled coffee options to the touchscreen menu.

Its guidance and tidy preparation are useful, although automatic frothing can be more successful with plant milk than dairy. You can use the wand manually if needed. Leave space behind the tank and compare the price with the Oracle Jet: this model still asks you to operate the tamping lever.

Key features

6. Ninja Luxe Café Pro ES701UK: A tidier upgrade to the Ninja coffee routine

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Integrated lever tamper
  • Built-in weighing and grind guidance
  • Five automatic milk presets

Cons

  • Costs more than the Premier
  • More controls than a simple espresso-only setup

The Pro builds on the Premier’s approachable grinder-and-brewer combination with an integrated tamper and additional drink and froth options. It is worth the upgrade if you make several drinks a day and want fewer loose preparation tools on the counter.

Its broad range of functions gives beginners room to explore different drinks. We would compare the actual price gap before choosing: the Premier already covers the central jobs of espresso, grinding and automatic milk. Buy the Pro for its neater workflow and extra choices, rather than assuming the higher model number alone guarantees a better cup.

7. Sage Barista Pro: Manual coffee preparation with an integrated grinder

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Fast heating and switching to steam
  • Built-in adjustable burr grinder
  • Clear display for grind and shot settings

Cons

  • Milk texturing takes practice
  • No assisted tamping

The Barista Pro remains an appealing middle ground for someone who enjoys making coffee rather than simply selecting a drink. Its grinder, clear display and quick-heating system keep the equipment together without automating the whole process. Consistent espresso and a speedy workflow suit a regular morning routine.

The trade-off is your involvement: distributing and tamping the grounds, adjusting extraction and steaming milk all need attention. Choose it if those are skills you want to develop. If uneven dosing is the frustration you most want to remove, the Express Impress below provides more assistance at the preparation stage.

Key features
  • Precision & Speed: The Barista Pro combines barista-quality performance with an intuitive interface for third-wave speciality coffee at home. Its ThermoJet...
  • Integrated Grinder, 30 Settings : Experience auto grind and dose control with the integrated conical burr grinder featuring 30 settings. Get the right amount of...
  • Low Pressure Pre-infusion & 9 Bar Extraction : Indulge in an opulent, creamy espresso with the low-pressure pre-infusion and high-pressure (9 bar) extraction...

8. Sage Barista Express Impress: Assisted dosing without a large touchscreen

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Dose feedback helps prepare a consistent puck
  • Integrated lever tamper
  • Built-in grinder with 25 settings

Cons

  • Manual milk frothing
  • Slower heating system than newer ThermoJet models

The Express Impress is the choice for a buyer who wants help with messy coffee preparation but prefers physical controls. Its dosing feedback and tamping lever make it easier to repeat the same preparation, while leaving extraction and milk technique open to experimentation.

The process is satisfying if you enjoy making coffee, although this is a substantial machine to leave out. It uses a different heating system from the Barista Pro and newer Touch models, so speed is not its main selling point. Pick it for assisted preparation and a traditional control layout, rather than a one-button cappuccino.

Key features
  • Temp Control Milk Jug Included: Create third wave speciality coffee at home with the Sage Barista Express Impress, combining precision espresso extraction...
  • Assisted Tamping with Intelligent Dosing: The Impress puck system helps simplify espresso preparation by automatically adjusting the coffee dose and assisting...
  • Integrated Precision Grinder: The integrated conical burr grinder features 25 grind settings and delivers freshly ground coffee directly into the portafilter...
  • PID Temperature Control: PID temperature control and low-pressure pre-infusion help deliver balanced espresso extraction with rich flavour and consistent...
  • Manual Microfoam Milk Texturing: The manual steam wand allows hands-on milk texturing for silky microfoam suitable for cappuccinos, lattes and flat whites

9. De’Longhi Magnifica Evo One Touch ECAM292.81.B: Automatic milk drinks with minimal preparation

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Makes complete drinks using the milk carafe
  • Simple drink-selection controls
  • Removable brew unit and water tank

Cons

  • No hot-milk-only dispensing
  • Grinder noise is noticeable

The Magnifica Evo suits a household that wants coffee ready before anyone starts discussing grind technique. This One Touch version has the LatteCrema milk carafe, so it handles a complete milk drink without a separate steaming stage. Its useful automatic functions make it worth comparing with more expensive one-touch machines.

You still need to clean the milk system and adjust the grind to suit your beans. It is noisy and cannot dispense plain hot milk on demand. For quick cappuccinos those compromises may be minor; for detailed control of individual espresso shots, one of the portafilter models is more satisfying.

Key features
  • VARIETY OF DRINKS Up to 7 coffee-based one touch recipes, from freshly ground beans
  • LatteCremaSystem for automatic milk preparations. Ease of use thanks to the new coloured control panel with coloured icons
  • MILK FROTHER Manual milk frother for milk preparations, or hot water for teas and infusions
  • EASE OF USE thanks to the new coloured control panel with coloured icons
  • EASY CLEANING Easy maintenance and cleaning, with automatic cleaning function and dishwasher safe components

10. Philips Baristina BAR300/60: Simple fresh-bean black coffee

Check price · Amazon

Pros

  • Automatically grinds, tamps and brews
  • Portafilter makes spent coffee easy to remove
  • Narrow, straightforward design

Cons

  • Grind size cannot be adjusted
  • This version has no milk frother

The Baristina is an unusually simple answer to fresh-bean espresso: move the handle into position and it takes care of grinding, tamping and brewing. Consistent results and an easy-to-clean portafilter avoid a complicated internal waste-coffee routine.

Its simplicity also sets a firm limit. The grind size is fixed, so you cannot dial in a troublesome bag of beans as you would on a Sage. The BAR300/60 linked here has no frother. Choose it for straightforward espresso and longer black coffee; milk-drink fans should include a separate frother in their comparison.

Key features
  • FRESH BEANS ARE BEST. Freshly ground beans give you the greatest coffee aroma and taste. Grinding the beans right before brewing turns your daily cup into...
  • SWIPE. BREW. ENJOY. Just swipe the handle. Baristina automatically grinds, tamps and brews your coffee. No need for any barista skills. It’s all taken care...
  • EASY TO CLEAN. NO HASSLE. Remove the portafilter. Rinse it. That's all. Baristina makes cleanup quick and intuitive. No complicated steps – it’s designed...
  • YOUR STYLISH LITTLE BARISTA AT HOME. Ideal grind size. Precise pressure. Accurate dosing. That's how real espresso is made.
  • REAL SMOOTH ESPRESSO. The 16-bar pressure pump releases full-on flavor from your beans for your espresso, creating a rich, creamy crema and a balanced flavor we...

How to choose

Decide how involved you want to be

A manual portafilter machine gives you control over coffee preparation but also asks you to learn it. Assisted machines can measure the dose, help tamp or recommend a grind adjustment. Fully automatic machines handle the brewing internally, which is easier for a busy household but offers a different experience from preparing each shot yourself.

Include the grinder in your budget

The Dedica Duo and Bambino Plus do not include grinders. Fresh beans and a suitable espresso grinder can matter more than upgrading to a machine with more drink icons. A built-in grinder keeps everything together; a separate one is easier to change independently later.

Choose the milk system carefully

A manual steam wand takes practice. An automatic wand reduces the work but still needs wiping and purging. A milk carafe can dispense a complete drink, though its tubes and seals add cleaning. Check which parts can go in a dishwasher rather than assuming that automatic means maintenance-free.

Make space for the whole routine

Leave clearance for the water tank, bean hopper, steam wand and a knock box. Fast heating does not mean every cup and portafilter is instantly warm. Follow the manual for water treatment, descaling and cleaning; limescale and old coffee oils can undermine an otherwise capable machine.
